Better policy begins with better information. Hosted by Mindful Choices for ADHD in cooperation with the Bipartisan Mental Health Caucus, this Congressional briefing marked an important milestone in bringing an evidence-based conversation about ADHD to Capitol Hill.
Dozens of Congressional staff, clinicians, researchers, and individuals with lived experience gathered to discuss the science of ADHD, the experiences of individuals and families living with the condition, and the emerging policy issues affecting the ADHD community.
Panelists including Dr. Aaron Dodini, Dr. Kathleen Nadeau, and Jessica Lynn-Lewis shared the importance of accurate diagnosis, stronger clinician education, and individualized, evidence-based care that reflects each person’s unique needs rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
Conversations like these are especially timely as a recent STAT article pointed out: there are ongoing federal efforts to develop guidance around antidepressant use and deprescribing following HHS Secretary Kennedy’s May announcement. While we’re still waiting to see how HHS operationalizes much of this work, the discussion reinforces an important principle that extends beyond any one medication or condition: complex health conditions require individualized, evidence-based care developed through thoughtful collaboration between patients and their health care providers.
The same is true for ADHD. Effective care is not about choosing one intervention over another—it is about developing an individualized plan that reflects a person’s symptoms, goals, and stage of life. That may include medication when clinically appropriate, alongside behavioral strategies, executive function coaching, lifestyle interventions, ongoing monitoring, and other supports.
We’re excited to continue these conversations during the second session of our Virtual Summer Summit Series, Successfully Transitioning: Expanding the ADHD Care Toolkit for Young Adults, where we’ll explore individualized approaches to care, the full range of evidence-based supports available to young adults, and the policies shaping access to these tools.
